A stand fan is very much like a desk top fan but is placed on the floor and has a long neck. The blades are often larger and the fan is often a bit more powerful as they are designed to cover a larger area, they also often have similar features such as the ability to change the power settings or have the stand fan oscillate and so send cool air in many directions.
Stand fans are great for when you want a larger fan or for when you cannot realistically place a fan on your desk. They are very easy to move around the room and place and so you can have a constant supply of cold air where ever you need it and they also usually have a long power lead. The stand fans are also quite tall and so can cool higher areas than a desk fan and this can be very useful in lots of situations.
